Adding a New Mobile App Locale

Follow these steps if a contributor requests their locale to be enabled in WordPress for Android or iOS apps.

Validate Locale Availability

  1. Does the language set exist for the app? (iOS / Android)
    • YES: Go to step 2
    • NO: Go to step 3
  2. Is the translation complete?
    • YES: Go to step 5
    • NO: Ask them to translate the project.
  3. Does the locale code exist in the available languages (iOS / Android) list?
    • YES: Ask the Mobile Team why the locale is not available.
    • NO: Go to step 4
  4. Check if the locale is supported in the mobile OS.
    iOS: https://www.ibabbleon.com/iOS-Language-Codes-ISO-639.html
    Android: https://www.ibabbleon.com/Google-Play-Store-Language-Codes.html
    • YES: Check with the Mobile Team to make sure it’s ok to create the language set.
    • NO: Since the locale is not supported, it can’t be added.
  5. Ask the Mobile Team to enable the locale.

Translation of release notes is only available if the Apple App Store or Google Play Store exists for the locale.

Add Translation Sets

In each project listed below, click “Project Actions” → “New Translation Set” to add a translation set for the locale.

iOS

Android

You must create the translation sets under the Dev/Release Notes projects, not iOS/Android projects. If you make a mistake, you can edit the ID to fix it.
