Glossary Entry: Handling HTML Entities in Translations

**Term:** HTML Entities

**Description:**

  • When translating WordPress plugins and themes, certain HTML entities must be preserved exactly as in the original source.
  • Do **not** replace these entities with normal quotation marks (`”`) or apostrophes (`’`) or other characters during translation.
  • Reason: These entities ensure safe and correct rendering and parsing of HTML markup. Incorrect substitutions can lead to XSS vulnerabilities, broken rendering, JSON parsing errors, or other technical issues.

**Common HTML Entities to Preserve:**

  • &`#8220;` — Left double quotation mark (“)
  • &`#8221;` — Right double quotation mark (”)
  • &`#8217` — Right single quotation mark / apostrophe (’)
  • &`lt;` — Less than sign ()
  • &`amp;` — Ampersand (&)

**Example:**
Original string:
`Note: If “Blog profile only” mode is enabled…`

Correct translation must keep the entities intact:
`참고: “블로그 프로필만” 모드가 활성화된 경우…`

Adding this glossary entry helps translators and reviewers avoid technical errors caused by incorrect substitution of HTML entities, especially when using machine translation or automated tools.
