Get Involved

Welcome and thank you for helping us market WordPress and its wonderful community! We’re so glad you have chosen to be part of the Global Marketing Team. There are so many ways to contribute in the team. At a contributor event, occasionally on particular tasks or more regularly.

The Marketing team promotes WordPress to current and future users and contributors. We create and amplify campaigns to support the growth of the WordPress project.

When and where does the team meet?

Instant messaging tool, Slack

We meet Tuesdays at 15:00 UTC in the #marketing channel on the Making WordPress Slack. Details of how to join Slack are in the section below.

The Marketing Team blog

The Team has its own blog, also known as the P2. Agendas, meeting notes, and more are published there and you can join in the discussions through the comments.

You can subscribe to receive blog posts via email. You can also do this through the widget in the sidebar of the Marketing blog. Updates to posts will not appear on email nor on other sites that publish the RSS feed. So do check the live site for the latest information.

We also publish a regular Update on some of the things we have been doing as a team (due to access issues, many of these updates have had to be shared on the Marketing blog. We hope to be able to return to our monthly summary update in the future.

Meeting notes

After the weekly global meeting, notes are written and published on the blog post. We ask the following meeting to review them and any alterations necessary can be made.

We ask at the following meeting to review the notes from the previous week. We publish notes / links to the meeting on Slack on the blog. Volunteers are welcome to join on a rota. There is lots of help available to get started too. We suggest some contributors may prefer to have been a member of the team for a few months and be more familiar with WordPress terminology to help them with writing the notes.

Planning tools we use

We use a number of task and project tools:

If you are an active contributor to the Marketing Team, you can request to join the team’s Google Drive folder. You can message any Team Rep in Slack to help connect you. Please note team reps may not be in the same timezone as yourself.

Creating a WordPress.org account

  • Create a WordPress.org account so that you can contribute to the open source project. You only need one account for all Make teams.
  • Step-by-step instructions
  • You need a WordPress.org account so that you can contribute. It means that you will have access to all resources and opportunities available.
  • You will receive a “@chat.wordpress.org” username which means you do not have to share your personal email address with others in Slack. You can instead use the handle you choose eg @ firstname

You can find our videos to help set up your WordPress.org account  and Make WordPress Slack accounts. Working across teams and with WordCamp Europe and other camps, we are regularly adding translated commentaries and captions. They will move in bulk to WordPress.tv and the Contributor Day Handbook on GitHub. Thanks to everyone who has been involved in making these. Let us know if you have presenting experience and can help with translating and recording voiceovers in other languages.

Creating a Slack Account

Like the other Contributor Teams, we communicate in the Making WordPress Slack.

Instructions to join the WordPress Slack. Follow these instructions. There is additional information and links below. You can find video step-by-step guides in a number of different languages.

Contributing async

Our meetings follow a format to promote inclusion and to acknowledge that many of our contributors need to contribute asynchronously due to their timezone.

  • The team aims to publish weekly agendas or collaboration documents on the Marketing blog to help everyone who wants to be involved and contributors from other teams to stay up-to-date and make contribution easier
  • You can also join the discussion and planning for each meeting on the weekly ticket on the GitHub Marketing Tasks board.
  • We try to use agenda numbering in the meeting on Slack in response to feedback to help those contribute asynchronously.

Have fun

We all love WordPress, both the software and the community. Remember to keep in mind the Code of Conduct, be friendly, helpful, and disagree in a productive way.

It’s marketing! It’s fun. Let’s do this.
