Even though you can contribute to WordPress through translation by yourself, there are many benefits to real-time collaboration with others. It can be not only fun and motivating, you will also be able to learn new linguistic and workflow knowledge from each other.
Here are some hints for collaborating with others in your locale team real-time.
Multiple Translators on a GlotPress Project
If your team is working on core or any other GlotPress project with a large number or strings at the same time, you can divide up the strings by following the steps below:
- Have everyone participating visit https://translate.wordpress.org/settings/ while logged-in
- Update all of the settings to match the value as others (e.g. Number of items per page: 40, Default Sort By: Original string, Default Sort Order: Descending) and click “Save Settings”
- Go to the “All” view of the project (*) you’ll be translating together. For example https://translate.wordpress.org/projects/wp/dev/wol/default/
- Using the pagination numbers, divide up the responsible pages for each person. For example, if there are 41 pages and 5 people are working together, the first person should take pages 1-8, second person 9-16, etc.
* By using the “All” view, you can avoid the fluctuation of the contents of each page. For example, if you distribute pages of “Untranslated” strings, the contents of pages will change when some strings get translated & pages are reloaded.
Tracking Tasks Using a Google Spreadsheet
Making the list of todo’s and it’s progress visible can really help everyone grasp the current situation. As a result, they will understand the priority tasks and get motivated to see the progress.
There are different ways to track tasks and your team can select any method that is the best fit for you. If you are not sure where to get started, try using the template as a starting point.
- Translation Progress Sheet (Example) – for Plugins, Themes, and other projects
- HelpHub Migration Worksheet (Template) – for support documentation
Google Doc for a Long-form Collaborative Translation
If you want to work together on a blog post or any long-form article, Google Docs can be useful. Check out A Guide to Collaborative Translation Workflows as an inspiration, and give it a try to find the best practice for your team.
