General Updates
Admin bar evolution
Status: Conceptual | @jameskoster
An early mockup exploring how the admin bar might evolve as a part of the admin redesign. On the frontend there’s a toolbar containing:
- A link to edit the current page.
- ‘Add’ menu.
- A link to the admin where users are able to access ‘favourites’ in the sidebar. These theoretically replace any custom admin bar links and are conceptually similar to ‘desktop shortcuts’ of old. Users can manage their favourites.
- A widget to control the toolbar position.
Toolbar contents could be user configurable so that users could also add links to notifications, profile, etc.
Unseen icon update

Status: Completed | @joen
The “unseen” icon was changed from a closed eye to an eye with a strikethrough, to match similar icons like unlink. This is also useful for show/hide password buttons. PR.
Navigation: Provide fallback when menu was deleted
Status: Ready for dev | @joen

If a menu gets deleted, the block has a ref that points to a missing menu. For the moment, an error is shown in the canvas. We can probably do better, and offer either falling back to the default Page List (no ref), or create a new menu. Issue.
System Updates
As part of efforts to advance the WordPress Design System, the following are visual updates to this effort.
Admin themes
Status: Conceptual | @jameskoster

An exploration into the dynamic generation of color scales, semantic color tokens, and the application thereof to create accessible admin themes with light/dark modes.
Update component: Combobox
Status: Conceptual | @jameskoster

An initial design spec for updating the Combobox component. The update surfaces the listbox in a popover that overlays content (rather than pushing content down like the current version). A floating combobox is also explored, where the search input and listbox are contained in a popover—this variant would be useful in data views.

Storybook: Color

Status: Completed | @joen
A first iteration of color documentation in Storybook. PR. See it here.
WordPress Photo Directory
Status: In progress | @fcoveram
As part of the WordPress.org style update, we started addressing the update of the Photo Directory section. The mockups made reuse many of the already-implemented patterns and styles in addition to other subtle tweaks. The proposal is still in discussion, but most decision are done.

5FTF. Sponsorship
Status: Completed | @joen @fcoveram
In an incredible fast pace, folks involved in the website redesign project worked on a new page in Five for the Future section that celebrates Salesforce source contribution. The copy and design coordination happened fast thanks to the existing dev and design workflow and a handy design library.
