Meta Janitors

This initiative started by Matt Mullenweg in April 2026 grants a trusted group of contributors WordPress.org sandbox access in order to make changes and improvements without “approval or feedback needed from any team, group, stakeholder, commenter, or approval from anyone but me (Matt).”

The goal is to move quickly, embrace experimentation, and rebuild WordPress.org into a world-class community hub that is as easy to contribute to as it is to consume from with a north star of the largest, most secure repository of free GPL code the world has ever seen, approachable to newcomers, rock-solid under the hood, and sovereign in identity.

Participants are encouraged to lean into AI tooling, explore tighter integration between WordPress.org and version-controlled workflows (SVN, Git, Trac, GitHub), and pursue ambitious improvements across localization, on-boarding, plugin/theme infrastructure, and event site lifecycle management. The only ask: post updates on Make blogs and in the public #meta-janitors channel on Slack so the community can stay in the loop.
